E I D O L O N
In October 2018, vocalist Mascha Corman asked Mike McCormick to play a duo concert with her in Switzerland, knowing very well that he was scheduled to be in Canada at the time. She wanted to be able to engage with his improvising electronics without his presence in an effort to explore the performative possibilities that lie between solo and duo settings. His response was to create the EIDOLON, an algorithmic improvising program written in the SuperCollider programming environment. In performance, the EIDOLON listens to Mascha’s performance, analyses the current musical situation, and independently makes decisions that inform the generated sounds and transformations of her voice.
The EIDOLON has been tested with instrumentalists from disparate musical backgrounds and with various improvisational approaches. A user-friendly interface is currently under development, after which the EIDOLON will be made available online for instrumentalists around the world to experiment with and expand upon this project.

MIKE MCCORMICK is an Oslo-based guitarist, laptop performer, and composer originally from Yellowknife, Canada. Though his primary expression is through music performance, Mike’s creative output draws from a variety of disciplines, including conceptual and performance art, electroacoustic music, twentieth-century literature, and various notated and improvised music traditions. His active projects include the improvising trio BRINICLE, the improvising laptop/saxophone duo Abelseth/McCormick, and the Oslo-based composer’s orchestra OJKOS.
